Starting university is always a scary process, but going to
a university in another country takes these nervous to a whole other level. On January
9th I boarded my flight to Charlotte, North Carolina. This would be my
first time going to the USA. The flight itself wasn't too bad, they had on-flight
entertainment, snacks and more food than you could possibly think of consuming
in a 10-hour flight.
After landing safely, I was greeted by the lovely members of
International Appalachian (INTAPP) at the airport who took us to The Best
Western Hotel for a one-night stay before we headed up to Appalachian State University.
January 10th, 8 a.m. and we were all up and ready for the two-hour
journey from Charlotte to Boone. I have to admit; the journey was something out
of a horror film! Appalachian State University is high up in the mountains and here
they experience a lot of fog and mist. So you can imagine what it would be like
for a coach driving up through these mountainous roads in thick fog where you
can only see a meter ahead. We made it in one piece though!
I’ve always been the type of person who watches a lot of
American high school/ college based films. And when I say a lot, I mean a lot. So,
coming to a real American college was something quite strange and exciting. Here
at App State, the city is based mainly around the university, so the university
is the main focus point of the city, that carries nearly 19,000 students. This
is nearly triple the amount of students that attend Roehampton University. So as
you can imagine this is a very big uni, but in terms of American universities,
this is considered to be one of the smaller ones.
Overall, arriving here in the US has been a smooth
transition that I am beyond grateful to experience this opportunity. The jetlag
took a bit of getting used to though, but my body clock is back to its old self
now!
Until next time,
Nadia
